Google is offering students at accredited Nigerian universities, polytechnics and colleges of education 12 months of its AI Plus plan at no cost, giving them access to premium artificial intelligence tools for research, revision and other academic work. The subscription, which Google values at ₦92,400 ($68.56), includes higher usage limits on Gemini, Gemini Study Notebooks, Gemini Live, Deep Research, interactive 3D visualisations, Google Lens Homework Helper and 400 gigabytes of Google storage.
The offer is available to eligible students who verify their enrolment through SheerID, a platform used to confirm student status. Students who claimed Google’s previous offer during the last academic year can renew their access for another 12 months by completing the verification process again. Google says the student offer is now available in 27 countries across Sub-Saharan Africa, placing Nigeria within a wider effort to introduce its AI products to young people on the continent.
For students, the immediate attraction is straightforward. Gemini can be used for real-time voice conversations, long-form research, file analysis and custom practice quizzes, while Study Notebooks and Guided Learning are designed to make the process more interactive than simply asking an AI system for an answer. The inclusion of unlimited file uploads and additional storage also makes the subscription useful beyond individual questions, particularly for students working with lecture notes, course materials, articles and other documents.

But the offer is also part of a larger campaign by Google to establish its AI tools in education. In October 2025, the company offered university students in Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, Rwanda, South Africa and Zimbabwe 12 months of free access to Google AI Pro. The following month, Google.org, the company’s philanthropic arm, committed $2.1 million to five Nigerian organisations working on advanced AI training and innovation. The programme was intended to support at least 10 higher institutions, train 50 lecturers and 50 teaching assistants, and reach more than 11,000 students over two to three years.
The repeated offers suggest that Google is not treating student access as a one-off promotion. Giving students premium tools for a year allows the company to introduce Gemini into ordinary academic routines at a point when many students are still forming their habits around research, writing, revision and digital work. The longer students use a particular platform, the more familiar its interface and features become, and the more likely it is to remain part of their workflow after the free period ends. Whether students eventually pay for the service is a separate question, but the opportunity to build familiarity at scale is valuable in itself.
Google presents the programme primarily as an attempt to reduce the financial barriers around advanced AI tools. For Nigerian students, that argument has some force. A subscription priced at ₦92,400 may be difficult to justify for students already managing tuition, accommodation, transport, textbooks and data costs. Access to higher usage limits, research tools and storage without an additional payment could make advanced AI available to students who would otherwise rely on free and more restricted versions of these services.
The educational value, however, will depend on how students use the tools. AI can help explain difficult subjects, generate practice questions, organise notes and make unfamiliar material easier to approach. It can also produce convincing but inaccurate explanations, encourage shallow engagement with course materials or make it easier to complete assignments without understanding them. The presence of a feature such as Guided Learning does not, by itself, resolve those problems. It changes the way the system is designed to respond, but students and institutions still have to decide how much responsibility should remain with the learner.
Google DeepMind tested Guided Learning in an eight-week study involving 1,763 students in West Africa in June. According to the study, students who used the feature recorded learning gains equivalent to between 1.2 and 1.7 years of typical progress. That result is significant if it can be reproduced across different subjects, age groups and learning environments, but it should not be treated as proof that the same gains will automatically appear among Nigerian university students using the wider AI Plus package. The study was conducted within a particular research setting, and the experience of students using AI independently for coursework may be very different from that of students participating in a structured study.
There is also a difference between making AI available and preparing students to use it well. Universities, polytechnics and colleges of education will have to contend with questions about plagiarism, assessment, authorship, fabricated references and the appropriate use of AI in coursework. A student who uses Gemini to understand a complex topic is engaging with the tool differently from one who submits an AI-generated essay as personal work. Without clear institutional guidance, the same technology can support learning in one situation and weaken it in another.
Google’s investment in student access therefore comes at a time when educational institutions are still working out what generative AI means for teaching and assessment. The company’s tools may help students overcome some barriers to information, but they do not remove the need for qualified lecturers, reliable course materials, functioning libraries or stable internet access. Nor do they solve the uneven distribution of digital resources between institutions and students. A premium AI subscription is useful only when students have the devices, connectivity and time required to use it consistently.
The offer also raises questions about the future cost of access. Students can use the service free for 12 months, but Google has not made the free period permanent. Students who come to depend on advanced features may eventually face a choice between paying for continued access, returning to a more limited free plan or moving to another service. That makes the offer both an educational opportunity and a customer-acquisition strategy, even if the two objectives are not mutually exclusive.
For now, Google is positioning AI Plus as a way for Nigerian students to study more effectively, develop digital skills and prepare for a labour market increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence. The company’s broader investment in training and institutional partnerships indicates that it wants to be involved not only in how students use AI for homework, but also in how they understand and apply the technology beyond school.
The value of the programme will ultimately be measured by what students are able to do with the access. If it helps them understand difficult subjects, conduct better research and develop useful skills, the offer could provide meaningful support at a time when advanced AI remains expensive for many users. If it mainly encourages dependence on automated answers, its educational benefits will be harder to defend. Free access may remove one barrier, but it does not determine whether the technology improves learning. That will depend on the students, the institutions teaching them and the standards established around the tools.
